Gluten Free Eating at the Jersey Shore

Updated July 2019

I’ve been lucky enough to spend summers in the southern New Jersey shore town of Avalon every year since childhood. It’s always interesting to see how the beach changes from year to year; the same goes for the food landscape. Sure, there are food traditions that seem to weather the seasons: cherished ice-cream parlors and pizza places. But even these tradition-driven towns are increasingly responding to consumer demand for healthier, more nutrient – dense food. With that shift comes more naturally gluten free offerings as well as efforts to accommodate gluten free diners. As a result, gluten free eating at the Jersey Shore is getting better with each passing year.

Our annual vacation to Avalon is the perfect opportunity to experience the gluten free food scene at the beach. While there are other businesses with gluten free offerings, this post covers only establishments my gluten free family has dined recently and vetted. As always, please mention your dietary needs prior to ordering and ask appropriate questions. Products and menus can change without notice and there is always a risk when dining out.

Thank you so much! My daughter has Celiac and dining out at the shore has been a huge challenge as some restaurants say GF but do so as a trendy option only. Sadly my daughter has lost days of her vacation feeling sick after eating cross contaminated gluten.

    • Andrea Tucker says:

Lisa, I’m sorry to hear your daughter got sick on vacation. Thankfully, there are some businesses doing gluten free well. I hope you enjoy the rest of your time at the beach!
